PART FOUR

“It was there that she found a man – Haz, the first of the Dominars.” – Ibrenicus

I landed on her back, my arms wrapping around her neck and my knees trying to grab hold of her. We were rocketing upward, her wings flapping wildly. Ice scoured my face as we gained speed and I had to turn my face in toward her steaming scales to catch my breath.

What madness is this, human?

If I could get a good grip with my knees, then I could wield my sword from atop her back. It would be precarious, but I could still help. I needed to prove to her that we could be friends. One nation helping another. One species helping another.

We require nothing.

She let off a burst of flame toward the Ifrit and the heat of her blast whipped back at me. My face felt dry and hot. I could endure worse than this for my goal. Her gnarled scales were easy enough to grip with my knees and I drew my sword shakily. I hadn’t realized this would take so much trust. If she moved the wrong way, I might run myself through. I could trust if I had to. I had no other options.

Swords are useless.

She was wrong about that. Her flames were what was useless. They did nothing against Ifrits. The flames merely heated their dust.

We spun around and now I saw other dragons gathering and winging their way toward us.

What she needed to do was shred these things with her massive teeth. Maybe, if nothing else, I could teach her what we knew. We knew we could shred them. We knew they had a weak point at the back of their heels if you could find it.

The dragon darted forward and spun to the side. I gritted my teeth and dug my knees in tighter. If death came for me, I was ready. Death was easier than failure. The end was lighter than betraying my people. Did my father think that when he died? Did he have time to think anything at all?

Where is your mother?

Lost. Lost to the plague of Ifrits which had driven us this far south. I still hoped we would find peace in the volcano lands, but we would need friends. We could not act alone.

You’re but a hatchling.

We dodged a swipe of the Ifrit’s hand, swerving to the side so hard that I had to flatten my whole body against her, tucking my forehead against her rough scales. I could trust her. She knew how to fly. She didn’t need to hear from me how to do it better.

Such trust!

I opened my eyes, fighting the spinning stars that careened across them. There! The weak point!

Above us, the other dragons engaged the Ifrit. He snatched a gold dragon out of the sky, dashing it to the ground in a mighty swipe. Beside the gold, a black dragon flamed right in the Ifrit’s face. Teeth! They needed to use their teeth!

The dragon I was riding swept past the foot of the Ifrit a mere arm’s length from his weak point.
